Interlocking Stone Projects
Patios, Walkways and Driveways
All interlocking stone installations start with you. Whether you are considering patio, walkway or driveway projects, we will work with you to understand your vision and make your design a reality.

Stone Pavers vs. Asphalt and Concrete

Asphalt and concrete tend to be the most commonly used materials, especially for new builds.  They are quick to install and generally cheaper.  However, there are longevity issues.  Our harsh Canadian climate tends to wear asphalt and concrete very quickly which can lead to expensive repair, resurfacing or total replacement of your project within a few short years.  There are also fewer options when it comes to customization in appearance and design.

Interlocking stone pavers are beautiful, durable and cost effective which make them very attractive.  They are stronger than their concrete and asphalt counterparts and the interlocking seams allow for water drainage and "wriggle" space to make them more resistant to damage from movement resulting from the repeated freezing and thawing cycles of the seasons.  Stone pavers also have a much wider range in colours, materials, shapes and sizes which allow you to create something both unique and functional for your design spaces including winding paths, intricate layouts and a variety of natural, structural, modern or contemporary designs.

The Importance of a Solid Base

Much like the strength of a house that depends on a solid foundation, a professional interlock job is all about the base underneath.  At Immix, we pride ourselves on creating a rock solid base to ensure that your interlock project will not shift, sink or move.

• We begin by removing old material and grading the area to create the proper slope and drainage path to ensure proper water run-off.
• The area is then excavated to a depth of at least 6 inches (for walkway or patio. 12 inches for driveways) to allow for sufficient space for a crushed stone base. This sub-base is then compacted with a jumping jack to pack the earth hard.
• Two inches of crushed 3/4" inch stone is added and compacted, followed by two more inches of crushed 3/4" stone which is then also compacted.
• A fine layer of limestone screening is added which is then graded and compacted.  This screening process is often repeated several times and compacted until the base is very hard and looks like concrete.
• The interlocking stone is set in place according to the design specifications and any custom pavers are cut and prepared.
• Once the design is complete, polymeric sand is swept into the joints to fill in the gaps between pavers and tamped into place to "set" the stones and to ensure the joints are filled completely.
• After the final tamping, the joints are topped up with polymeric sand as needed and then the design is cleaned off with a power blower to remove any leftover sand.
• The polymeric sand is then activated with a mist of water which causes the sand to harden.  This strengthens the design and helps to prevent weed growth.
• Finally, all stonework must be retained or else the pavers will tend to splay over time along the softer edges of lawns and gardens.  If the perimeter stones start to move, the interior stone follows. To prevent this, we use 8 foot strips of L-shaped edging pinned in place with 1 foot spikes to keep the design firmly in place.
